Bay Area, CA Nature Village: Naturalist Training
The ancient trackers knew their land like they knew their homes. Every rock, every tree and plant were familiar. To them nature was family.
Today's children can identify thousands of logos but only a few wild plants. We seek to change that. At TrackersBAY we seek to train a village of young naturalists who not only appreciate the green world around them, but choose to become a part of caring for it.
Wild Plants and Herbs Learn to identify the flowers, wood and grasses around us. Plus, explore ancient ways of seeing the plants as part of the culture and village.
Animal Tracking How did the ancient trackers know when an animal passed by? From scuff marks on a rock to hair on a broken branch, the age old skill of tracking becomes a gateway to awareness few know to be possible.
Aidless Navigation Train to find direction by the sun, stars and stories. Understand how ancient people found their way in this world.
Outdoor Safety Through positive support, learn all about the power of the nature so you can stay safe, healthy and happy in it.
Bird Songs and Calls Birds can tell you if a fox is moving through the woods simply by their behavior and alarm. We learn to speak this "language of the birds" so we can tune into this symphony of the forest.
Trees and Caretaking Humans and trees have a rich history of thriving together. Many great forests are actually landscapes tended to by ancient cultures. We explore how human connection to the land can be a positive force of restoration, sustainability and caretaking.

We help children to feel like that group of kids wandering country backyards 50 years ago: independent, tired, muddy, wet and happy from the woods and wild. We are acutely aware of full and real hazards of the out of doors after years of working in environmental education. We try to move away from the highly structured and limiting tolerances of conventional environmental education while keeping kids truly safe but not encapsulated from, or phobic of nature. We are deep patriots to the value of offering guided yet very free and transparent experiences for kids. We believe it is okay to be thirsty at times, cold at times, and wet at times. It builds empathy and care for the gifts of life. It fosters adventure and sincere accomplishment. We also believe it is critical to feel supported and cared for as they truly explore their passion and responsibility. And through a healthy life immersed in nature, they test the limits and great potential of the often untapped physical and emotional resiliency they possess.
